Donations for Katie: Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! First, why don't you tell us a little about yourself.

Zippityduda: My name is Jennine and I live in Minneapolis with my husband, two children and a basset hound. For my day job, I work for a state-wide nonprofit and for my fun job, I spend pretty much all my waking moments sewing. I love science fiction television, jam-based music and pie.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

Z: My mother-in-law taught me to quilt on a vacation trip to their house in 1998 and I just haven't been the same since. As I learn new techniques, I expand my repertoire so now I sew all kinds of goodies from fabric.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

Z: My favorite part about what I do is knowing that I am able to create something both beautiful AND useful. We all have certain utilitarian needs in our lives but we might as well have something pretty that serves the same purpose, right?

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

Z: Inspiration comes at me from everywhere but particularly music... I find that I will use song lyrics for quilt titles and different music to inspire me as I'm choosing fabric. A quilt made while listening to Iroquois women's songs will look very different from a quilt chosen while listening to the Grateful Dead, but both will beautiful!

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

Z: Although I don't know Katie personally, she is a dear friend of a dear friend which means she's my friend, too. Because my mother is currently battling pancreatic cancer and we are so so so very fortunte that she has insurance to cover her care, I feel that means I need to do something to help support someone who isn't in that same boat. If my creations can help bring Katie comfort by easing the pressure to pay the medical bills, then my mad sewing skills will have achieved something wonderful!

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

Z: Katie, Sarah has told me you are a strong, kind, vibrant, courageous woman and I'm pulling for you! Sending love and hugs and all the good vibes I can muster.

Crooked Hook Designs: I'm Gabrielle, stay at home mom to two girls, ages 5 and 2. I enjoy yoga, wine, dance-parties with my girls, and trips to the dog park with our crazy mutt.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

CHD: My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 7. I had lost interest in it but then picked it up again when I was expecting my first child and have been sticthing ever since!

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

CHD: I love being able to produce clothing items and accessories in a balance of comfort, beauty, and fashion. A chunky cowl in the perfect color or a lacy, hand-painted shawl can breathe new life into your wardrobe and keep you warm.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

CHD: From everywhere - fashion magazines, people-watching. I come up with designs that I'd like to wear myself, or sometimes a customer's custom request will inspire me to go in a different direction.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

CHD: I think it's amazing how people in the arts come together to help another, and I am very pleased to be a part of that. Just a simple donation can help raise awareness and funds for this wonderful cause.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

CHD: Your will and spirit are so inspiring! The wonderful support of friends, family, and colleagues will help you through this battle.

SEA: I started taking pictures in college just for fun, and got a professional camera after graduating. Since then, I've just been taking random photo jobs and seeing how much I can learn!

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

SEA: Seeing people's faces when I show them their picture and they like how it looks.

DfK: Your portfolio contains such a broad variety of styles and subjects. Where do you get your inspiration?

SEA: Anything from music to the way the sky looks outside. I take it from everywhere!

Yuko: My name is Yuko Stano, a mom of 3-year-old daughter and 3-month-old boy and a wife of a lovely husband. I am Japanese. I moved to the United States about 10 years ago and now live in Albany NY.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

Y: My sister is a great sewer and she taught me how to sew. My first project was making pajamas for my boyfriend when I was fifteen.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

Y: I can stay at home with my children and work whenever I have a little spare time. Since my son was born in December, I haven't been able to work as much as I used to though. But I can always give up 10 mins of my sleep at night for sewing.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

Y: From all the beautiful fabric that is available now. I LOVE LOVE LOVE fabric. I actually started my own fabric shop on Etsy a little while ago.

Y: I lost my nephew who was only 6 years old with cancer. I just know how hard it is to see that someone who you care about is suffering.

Jen: My name is Jen, and when I'm not teaching or mothering, I love to make things. I finished the MFA program at Ashland University this past summer, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning a huge amount about crafting a solid poem, working closely with so many extraordinarily talented writers, and building friendships that I'm sure will last a very long time. DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

J: When I was 12 or so, my friend Allie taught me how to sew by hand. I made a number of blankets as gifts between that time and my college days. I received a marvelous second-hand sewing machine for Christmas when I was 22, and slowly figured out how to make it go. After our son was born and I was home from work, I picked up sewing again, but I decided that making bags was more my style.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

J: I love a lot of things about my work! I love having some down time in the workshop--just me and the fabric and the scissors. (And the machine and the pins and the iron... haha!) I love the tremendous variety of fabrics that are available right now. I love coming up with new designs, especially when inspiration strikes. I love figuring out a new way to make an old design. I love when people want me to make them something special and it turns out awesome.

DfK: You offer so many beautiful things! Where do you get your inspiration?

J: I am totally inspired by beautiful fabrics. My friends inspire me to make new things, too--a special diaper bag design, a different size of an old design. Sometimes inspiration just hits me and I don't know where it comes from, and when that happens, it is pretty exciting.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

J: I lost a dear friend to cancer a few years ago, and so I thought if my donating a handmade item to this auction can help Katie beat her lymphoma, I'm all for it.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

J: Katie, I was so inspired by your strength as you fight this disease. Your willingness to keep on going to parties and urging your friends out to the dance floor is such a great example for anybody, whether they are healthy or not. I wish you all the very best.

Donations for Katie: Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! First, why don't you tell us a little about yourself.

Courtney: About me: I'm a 24 year old girl from a small town outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I do not have a swamp in my backyard, there are no pet alligators (that I know of), and I can pronounce the words 'beignet', 'roux', 'Tchoupitoulas', 'Natchitoches' and 'Decatur' correctly and without a blink of an eye.

Twilight Crafts comes in two parts. 1.) The livejournal community that started it all, where bloggers came together to express their love of the series and their crafty habits in one place. 2.) http://twilightcrafts.net/ – a more official blog where we showcase many crafts and talents.

DfK: How was Twilight Crafts created?

C: Twilight Crafts was created back in February of 2007 when Jen (founder and co-mod) realized that there were no outlets for crafters in the Twilight fandom. Having always been a fan of the creative outlet of crafting, Jen figured if she couldn't find one, she'd create one! We started off very slowly, with a handful of members. I didn't come on as a co-moderator for a month or so. I haven't regretted one moment of it.

DfK: What do you love most about the group?

C: I've never met a more passionate group of people in my life. Crafters are kind, dedicated, and generous. They look out for one another without question, and they encourage each other to try new things and to push their boundaries, creatively. There's never an end to the things you can try, and the end results are so rewarding. I know when I finish crafting something Twilight-inspired, I'm immediately posting it to the group, because I know I'll get great feedback.

DfK: Where do you get your own crafty inspiration?

C: I get inspiration from everything around me. I get inspiration from books such as Twilight and Harry Potter, to a shirts I see on designer websites that make me think, “Hey, I could do that myself!” But one of the things that inspires me the most are my friends, and watching how they can accomplish so many things – it makes me strive to be a better crafter.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

C: As an affiliate of BellaBejeweled, I came across the blog for Katie and was immediately determined to do something to help. I'm no Donald Trump, nor am I friends with the President...but I can create things with my hands. Crafting is something I love, and if by doing something I love I can help one person receive the help he/she needs, I'd make hundreds of crafts.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

C: Katie, I know we've never met, but I feel like I know you already! You've got this amazing support group that is doing something fantastic and I'm truly honored to be a part of it. I hope that somehow, even if it's just a tiny bit, I can help you fight this. You're in my thoughts!

M: I really never know what the result of my endeavors will be, but I do love it when I'm able to create something that captures the imagination and touches the viewer. I feel some of my work does that.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

M: I get my inspiration mostly from nature, observation, and subtleties in life.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

M: Katie's life is precious. Though strangers, we are all connected and need to support one another.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

M: Katie, from what your friends say, you are the type of person who gives strength and inspiration to others despite what you are going through. Not everyone can do that and it is a gift. You're in my thoughts and I wish you the best.

Traci: Hi Everyone! My name is Traci Porczynski and I am the founder of Sampler Village. Sampler Village is designed to help crafters and artisans get their products noticed. Our goal is to give you and your shop a boost in traffic, unlike conventional advertising, potential buyers get to try a sampling of what you have to offer, then come back and purchase products directly from you! Boxes with a different theme go on sale the 21st of each month. We love our Villagers and our wonderful Visitors, so we are striving to make Sampler Village the best sample box out there!

DfK: The Sampler Village is such a unique idea - where did the idea come from, and what were the early months like?

T: I love sample boxes! It is so fun discovering new shops and products. I have met so many nice people along they way and hope the journey continues for many years to come. We are actually still in our early months :), we are growing each month with new Villagers signing up all the time. We are looking forward to promoting many wonderful shops this year and beyond!

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

T: The people! I have gotten to know so many wonderful people that I may have never known otherwise. I strive to make the sample boxes personal, so when you receive a box in the mail it is presented perfectly, with lots of flair. I have gotten many compliments on how the sample boxes look when they are received, and I believe that my Villagers put so much work into making such spectacular samples, that the boxes themselves should look just as good.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

T: My inspiration comes from finding such wonderful shops, that I personally love, and then spreading the word about them. I know how hard it is to "stand out" in the crowd. Sometimes, even if people are looking for you, they cannot find you. The wonderful people that purchase the sample boxes are looking for you! That is why they purchase the box, to find products and shops they may not have found otherwise. My inspiration comes from helping these great shops get noticed!

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

T: One of my wonderful villagers, Sarah (Bella Bejeweled) emailed about Katie, and I was certainly eager to help. I can only be humbled by Katies sheer determination not to let cancer take over her life. KEEP THE FAITH KATIE!!

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

T: It is hard to put into words sometimes what you would like to say..You are a hero to all of us, the determination you have is incredible! My thoughts and prayers are with you and may God Bless You!

Abbey James: My name is Rebecca Smith, I live in Aurora, OH with my husband and 5 children. I have been making bath and body products for 3 years and hoping to devote more time to my business when my last child enters first grade this fall!

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

AJ: One of my daughters was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis a few years ago, which led me to search for natural remedies for her pain and inflammation. I discovered all of the benefits of natural oils and dead sea salt therapies and also discovered the wonderful world of handmade soap! Reading all of this new information led me to take notice of the ingredients listed on all of my store-bought products. I realized most of the products offered nothing in the way of REAL or beneficial ingredients. I decided to try a little experimentation, and soon, The Abbey James Co. was born!

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

AJ: I love the artistic side of creating a product, packaging it beautifully and knowing I am offering a highly beneficial product, as well.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

AJ: I love fabrics and papers and usually use those as my jumping off point as far as design goes, or the scent of an essential or fragrance oil may dictate the color or design also. As for the products, I have started with what my family and I need at any given time!

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

AJ: A few years ago, we brought my mother-in-law to live with us during her last months before she died of cancer. MaryAnn was a woman of strength, grace, courage, and faith. Though it was a bit hard, having four children under 6 at the time, it was the greatest gift to me, as well. Spending 24 hours a day with MaryAnn gave me a wonderful opportunity to know her as I otherwise would not have. It also gave me much to contemplate about our real purpose on this earth. Hearing what a person thinks about and recalls when they know they are leaving this earth really makes you think about what we have all been given a chance to do while we are here. I think about MaryAnn so often it is a bit uncanny, but it always helps to keep my perspective on the greater gifts in life. Any time I am asked to give to this sort of thing, it hits a soft spot, and I can't refuse.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

AJ: You are obviously an inspiration to all who know you and are giving them a wonderful gift by your courage and strength. The impact you have made is enormous and you should be very proud and know how much you are loved!

Aileen: I am a mother of 3 boys and one more boy in the oven. My husband and I love creativity and cannot get enough of it. I wish I had more hours in the day to be creative as I work full time as well. As a child I remember my mother being very creative with sewing and so I inherited the talent from her.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

A: Two years ago my sister in law and I went to a craft show and I loved the idea of homemade. I said to her next year you and I will be part of this event and that's where it all started.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

A: I am a fabric addict. I love to shop for new fabrics.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

A: I am inspired by colors and designs. So many fabrics and ideas that motivate me. I can't wait to see the finish product so once I start I can't put it down.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

A: My X husband has terminal cancer and watching him struggle with his health, time, money, it's devastating. He is a fighter and still goes to work full time. He is an inspiration to me. It's unfair for any human being to endure this disease. I can't imagine being in their shoes and truly admire their strength and determination to live.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

A: Hi Katie! It is my pleasure to be part of this event. I wish you the best and will have you in my prayers. Keep up the good fight. God bless.

Lauren: Hmm...I am Lauren, and I love the color. I also love frozen yogurt, and after a long search for the very best froyo, I have found that Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt is the most heavenly, so I stock my freezer with it. I am married to my high school sweetheart, and I fall in love with him a little more each day by the small acts of kindness we give each other. I am happiest when I am creating, whether it be taking photos, making dinner, decorating our home or designing headbands. I love to go thrifting, travel, try out new restaurants, work out, spend time with family, and get dressed up. I also love the Lord and try to live in a way that would please Him. I just love life :)

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

L: A little over a year ago I started really falling in love with headbands. I was mostly inspired by Blair Waldorf on "Gossip Girl". She always wore such beautiful headbands, and so I started searching for similar ones. I found that most were way to costly, so I studied them and tried my hand at making my own version. When people saw my headbands they started asking for me to make them. It sort of took off that way.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

L: I love when my customers send me pictures of them wearing their headband. Especially when they tell me how much they love it. It's happy to know others love something that I designed and crafted.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

L: I am inspired a lot by the media, which most people are. What stars wear, really sets the stage for what will and is in fashion. I also love to look at Urban Outfitters for ideas. They have a very urban style with just enough touch of vintage.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

L: When Sara approached me with the idea, I just knew I needed to participate. I think whenever an opportunity to do service arrives, we should jump at the chance. Service to others is what Jesus taught us to do, and I truly believe that serving others gives us the greatest happiness.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

L: Hang in there! There are a lot of people that love you and are pulling for you!

She says I loved putting anything together that was tedious and had small pieces. I can see this still tendency for repetition and attention to detail constantly coming through in my work today.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

H: I love making things that are usable, while still being unique and interesting. I love seeing things come together, and the final product that is created.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

H: I get my inspiration from everything around me. Between school and work, I am constantly surrounded by creativity, which is what keeps me going and keeps me inspired.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

H: This seemed like a great cause and and a wonderful opportunity to help someone in need through my creativity.

Pondhopper: Mmmm – I’m not good at this bit, but here goes! I’m Lorraine and I live in Canada in a wonderful old farmhouse in the almost - middle of the City of Edmonton! Our garden has beautiful 100 year old elm trees where we built a tree house that nestles in the middle of the branches. Now that our two sons are grown, my husband and I use the tree house to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine during hot summer afternoons. So the tree house has evolved from a child’s play place to a lovely sanctuary complete with garden chairs, hammock, bookcase and chandelier!

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

P: I don’t remember ever really “starting” – I have just always made stuff! Formally, I pursued drawing, painting, papercrafts and sculpting throughout my school and college years, studied sewing and textiles in England and learned about jewelry in Montreal. Informally, I grew up helping my Mum sew my dance costumes and learning photography from my Dad – I can still remember going into the attic where the darkroom was and watching the magical process of pictures appearing on a blank sheet of paper (pre-digital of course!).

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

P: The truth is I am just addicted to everything about the process of creation - from the initial inspiration to the end result, I love it all! I really enjoy taking something that has a previous life and may otherwise be discarded and turning it into a unique new piece to be loved. I especially like hearing stories about how my items are used by their new owners.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

P: I find inspiration comes from so many different places it would be hard to narrow it down – my head is constantly bombarded with ideas and I have scrawled notes in every nook and cranny of my house, car, purse and pockets! Often, inspiration will come from the materials and techniques themselves. I like working on concepts that are not fully dictated in the beginning and the final outcome is a bit of a surprise because it has evolved throughout the creation process.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

P: Katie reminds me of a dear friend who battled cancer with the utmost grace and humour. She always had a sparkle in her eye and never lost her joy of life. It was humbling, heartbreaking and uplifting to be a part of her journey and I have a feeling Katie’s own journey, as difficult as it is, brings many gifts to her family and friends also.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

P: I wish you the very best Katie.

Black Dahlia: well, my name is Amanda. I am a jeweler, a soaper, and a novice hat maker. I live in a sleepy little town where horses outnumber vehicles (theres a horse-tie up at mcdonalds!) and I can fall asleep to the sound of frogs by the river. I basically live in a zoo: my siamese kitty named Liberace, a lizard, a turtle, a toad, 9 fish and my husband. Its a simple life and I love it :)
DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

BD: As long as I can remember, I was always creating something out of anything I found laying around. My mom was my Girl Scout leader so she was always collecting ribbons, pipecleaners, milkcartons, etc, that I would then claim as my own and create nonsense. That progressed into painting and a bit of leather work, ceramics, more painting. After visiting a gemshow and picking up a few items on impulse, I decided jewelry was the way to go.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

BD: I believe what I love most about the pieces I create is wearing a necklace out somewhere and being complimented on it and the admiration when they find out I've made it myself. I had a cashier at Target buy a necklace right off my neck -- nothing beats that!

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

BD: My inspiration comes from everywhere. I know that is pretty cliche but I could see the wildflowers along the freeway and think of a great color combo, read a book and imagine the type of jewelry the character might wear, search for a tool in the garage to fix something and think of someway to apply that tool to my jewelry as well. I definitely have a random thinking brain.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

BD: I decided to support Katie because I have had family members deal with cancer and I know how tough it is for everyone involved. My mother struggled with cervical cancer for about 2 1/2 years before it overcame her, and my grandfather has fought Lymphoma on and off his entire life.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

BD: I would just like to tell Katie not to give up no matter what. There are always people out there who can pick you up when you're down, and help you where they can. I found this quote in a magazine when my mom was sick and have kept it close ever since: "In spite of illness, in spite even of the archenemy sorrow, one an remain alive long past the usual date of disintegration if one is unafraid of change, insatiable in intellectual curiosity, interested in big things, and happy in small ways." --Edith Wharton

Christy: I'm a 34-year old married Mommy of two angel-eyes-scumpy-bum boys. My little family of four completely and fully dominate my world. I'm certainly living what I was born to do. At the end of the day, a little foot massage, a glass of wine, and you'll always find me with knitting needles in my hand, working away in supreme zen. Knitting is my therapy, I'm so thankful for it.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

C: When I was a little girl and my sister and I were bored in those long summer days, our mother would say "you could knit or crochet" and set us down with our Susan Boyle's and some thick acrylic something-or-other and that was that. Snarled rows of purl and knit and endless knots she'd have to fix. Some 25-years later and I'm immersed in fluffy angoras, slippery silks, and sturdy wools with metallic metal sticks replaced by sleek and polished wood or bamboo. Heaven.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

C: The idea of making something functional and whimsical, something that will be worn by my babies, and passed down to their babies, creating all that memory and magic from something that was grown on a sheep is delightful! Really! And to be continuing the long history of knitting is an honor. My son's favorite "blankie" I knit while he kept me company in my belly, was with him from day one in the hospital, and he won't go to bed without it. How rewarding is that? I love to create life - so to speak, by sewing together little figures, or painting new faces where you wouldn't think to find them.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

C: Debbie Bliss, Susan Anderson, Alan Dart to name a few. The history woven together with twisty cables and strong fair isles. I wait like a puppy at the door for my next issue of "Interweave Knits"! As far as my painting, I love expressions - I'm an eye talker, so I'll be watching your face. It's about emotive painting for me. And my sewing is all about love. Little families, I mean that's what we're here for to love, love, love.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

C: As a 10-year cancer survivor, I know what a scary place that is. The absolute last thing any person in that battle needs to think about is finances. Instead, supreme care and positive energies on the healing process is all dear Katie needs. Whatever any of us can do to make that more of a possibility for Katie is what we should do.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

C: Be strong. You're a woman which in and of itself makes you an Amazon. Love and prayers are all around you Katie. You will succeed.

foundling: I live in Asheville, NC with my husband and two dogs. I've been making things through foundling for about five years now. I work from my basement studio and love, love, love what I do.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

f: I loved my collage classes in college and started using vintage fabrics and papers for those projects. When I was done with school, those were the materials I kept going back to and wanting to use in my work. Things just kind of evolved toward jewelry and I eventually took some silversmithing classes.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

f: I love collecting old things and making them into something people can wear and enjoy. I love the idea that those materials have already had little lives of their own with experiences we can only imagine, and that now they've set out for more adventures.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

f: The materials themselves provide lots of inspiration. I also keep a wall of imagery that I find beautiful. Up there right now I have some beautiful faded postcards, paint chips of colors I'm loving, illustrations from old children's science books, and a Hiroshige print.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

f: I don't know Katie personally, but I know lots of other artists who have suffered through disease because they can't afford health insurance. I have friends who need mental health care, who need dental work done, who wait to have serious problems checked until they can afford it and don't know when they'll be able to afford it. It's ridiculous that people could find themselves in a situation like this in a place where we have the means to care for people, but choose not to make it work. I appreciate the chance to help make it work.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

f: I'm sure you know better than I do, but you've got good friends, Katie!

Schiers Knits: In 1991 I learned to crochet. In 1995 I decided to branch out on my crafting ability and learn to sew. And in 1999 I taught myself to knit. It was difficult at first, but I have managed to teach myself how to. I am always on the lookout for something new to learn so... From 2002-2004 I went to school and in 2004 I received my BA in Interior Decorating/Design and in 2005 I bought a knitting machine and taught myself to use it. I LOVE IT!! But that was not enough so over the next couple years I taught myself to finger knit, scrapbook and make jewelry. My most recent venture was how to bead weave. It is by far the most difficult thing to learn, but it is so fun.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

SK: When I was 10 years old my adopted grandma handed me a ball of yarn and a hook and said chain it. She showed me once and I did it, the whole skein. When I finished with that she handed me another ball of yarn and said okay now you are going to learn how to add yarn to a project and single crochet. She showed me and I did the whole ball. I was so interested in it that I started searching for every book and article I could find on how to crochet.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

SK: The best thing about my work is that I can work at home and still be a stay-at-home-mom. It keeps me busy on my kids down time and I love that. I love getting to share my talent.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

SK: My kids are my biggest inspiration. They are my little models for my products. They give me so many ideas when it comes to girly hats and boyish hats and they love to help me with colors and designs.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

SK: I love to get involved in anything and everything I can when it comes to charities and fundraisers. I love to donate my time to help others.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

SK: You seem like you are a very friendly upbeat person. You are an inspiration. You show people that you shouldn't let anything get you down.

Mel: Hi. I'm Mel. I'm a native New Yorker who will be moving to Philadelphia soon. I love creating things and would have to say that for me a day without creating or being inspired by something is a day that's missing something.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

M: My grandmother taught me how to crochet and knit when I was a little girl. I started making simple things like potholders for my mom, an eyeglass case for my dad and then hats and clothes for my dolls. Yarn and crochet have since become my passion and my hands have not been idle since.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

M: I love hearing about how the items I create bring a smile to someone's face. I love the excitement of it all. Sometimes when I'm creating a pattern for a hat I envision one thing and something else entirely new develops. It's a happy accident! I love working with colors and putting together color combinations. I also really enjoy the freedom and independence that self employment offers. I'm my own boss and, while it's a lot of responsibility, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

M: I have to admit that I'm not a slave to fashion trends. I keep it simple when dressing myself and wear lots of black. That being said I take inspiration from colors I see in nature or if I see a certain painting or photo I like I'll imagine how the colors would look in a hat. I also get inspired from browsing in yarn shops.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

M: Even though I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Katie personally I feel that I already know her through the wonderful things that have been said about her by those that do. Her zest for life and positive attitude are truly inspiring and something that we should all aspire to. We all have something to be thankful for no matter how worse off we feel. I also feel very strongly about supporting those with cancer since my mom is a thyroid cancer survivor.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

M: Katie, you are wonderful, gorgeous gal inside and out. You truly inspire me. Don't ever give up the fight. We're all here for you. :)

Marcia: My name is Marcia Beck and I live on the beautiful central coast of California. I am a wife, mother, sister, friend, designer of many things...you get the picture. I have been a hairstylist for 22 years but have recently felt as though I need a new creative outlet which led me to my current passion, hiphugger.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

M: I was going through a pretty rough time in my life (my son was a teenager...i know all of you can relate to this!) and was consumed with worry and grief. It's all I could see. I came out of the bedroom from folding clothes one day and my sweet, sweet husband had set up my machine and a bunch of cut bag pieces I had given up on. I hadn't sewn in a long time. He knew what I needed more than I did! Sewing was (and still is) a working meditation for me. A chance to be fully present and in the moment. No worry, no fear, just pure joy. From this hiphugger grew into a viable business which hopefully I can do full time at some point very soon! Oh, and, everyone is doing great!

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

M: I love the hunt for materials, combining the fabrics, the inspiration, the connection I feel towards the people that purchase my bags. The fact that I belong to a community of craftspeople and artists with a vision of change.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

M: I am inspired by people. Conversations. The feel of a fabric. Love.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

M: I read about Katie and her situation and was immediatly touched. First, that adorable face just jumps out at you and secondly, I just felt inspired! I will help a sister out in whatever way I possibly can! I was honored to be chosen to participate.

Emily: I'm that quirky chick who knows how to make just about anything. Kinda like a crafty McGyver. I’m in love with a wonderful man who loves me back. I have three great kids ages 3 to 15. I live in the woods way out in the boonies. I enjoy nature, gardening, and am somewhat of a hermit… I love to stay home and make stuff. I work a few hours a week as a caregiver to an older couple cooking, cleaning, and driving them to doctor’s appointments. I have fallen in love with seniors. The older generation has so much wisdom to share about what's important and how to live your life happily.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

E: All of the women in my family are multi-talented, quilting, crocheting, knitting, baking, canning vegetables, braiding rugs, needlework, hooked rugs, and so much more. I just sat back and soaked it all up when I was little. My Aunt learned to make soap from the Amish ladies she befriended in WV. She sent me some, and I was hooked! I had a real hard time getting over the whole lard and tallow- “bathing in bacon” aspect of Amish soap… So I started researching and making vegan soaps. That was back in 2000. Those first few batches were very expensive failures, but I hung in there. Since then I have made and sold over 10,000 bars of soap. It’s addicting. New scents, new colors, swirls, chunks, stripes…there are so many options!

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

E: I’ve been working from home for over 10 years, now, and I love being home, working in my jammies, and being with my kids. My three year old loves to watch Mama “Maka da soap!”, and he sits in my lap while I crochet. What a great job!

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

E: Music, nature, and Life. My favorite quote is from Salvador DeMadariaga: "The conveyance of spirit by means of matter.” It is the essence of what I do. I feel that everything I make comes straight from my creative soul, and it is my job here on Earth to bring it into creation to share with others. If I feel like crocheting, I crochet. If I feel like making soap, I make soap. If I feel like taking the day off and lazying around at the beach, we head for the beach. I don’t force it. If the feeling isn’t there that day, it's just not.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

E: Katie and her husband are like lots of people: Giving up the 9-5 world to follow their hearts and souls and be ‘real’. Unfortunately, in this age, that may leave them with little or no health insurance, no “financial security” and an unpredictable income. Katie needs our support to continue her positive crusade, showing the world that when life serves up lemons, you make lemonade. From what I’ve read about Katie, her strength and courage are contagious. I want to help her continue this crusade!

Tara: Well, I'm a college graduate turned SAHM.

DfK: How did you get started blogging on Dandy Giveaway?

T: There are lots of blogs out there that do giveaways, so I'm definitely not the first. People have been after me for a while to write a children's book since they like my writing style in our family blog. I thought that would be way too time consuming, so I decided to stick with the blog format. However, I do now have that children's book in the works and currently shopping it around to different publishers. :) I've really grown to love advertising for various companies and shops despite the fact that my degree is not in advertising. After all, I have a B.A. in Psychology! Possibly all of my time spent writing college papers has helped with the advertising, though. :)

DfK: How do you find and choose the businesses you feature?

T: I mainly look for things that the followers of the blog will be interested in. Items for themselves (women primarily) and children.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

T: I like to try and find the good in everything. From my About Section of the blog: Why dandelions? Well, they were my late grandfather's favorite flower. That's right...he didn't view them as being a weed, but rather a beautiful plant! While others would become frustrated with how they overtook their perfect, green grass he delighted in their appearance. He would always regret having to mow them down, but they were hardy plants that would grow right back and spread across the lawn. I'm sure that his next door neighbors always loved how he was willing to share his dandelions with their lawns! :) Thanks Boompa for teaching me that all things in life can be just dandy.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

T: I first learned about Katie through my advertising for Bella Bejeweled. Last summer was spent primarily taking care of my Nana who also has Lymphoma; taking her to doctors appointments, treatments, etc. So this type of cancer to particularly close to my heart. Nana's brain tumor is expected to be fully gone in the coming months. I now want to help others in any way that I can, so they know that it is possible to fight this and win. If a 75 year old woman can then anyone can!

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

T: Stay strong! You can beat this! Even though it's hard...try and look for the positives in things. You have great friends who are doing this auction for you. That is a major positive. Take care of yourself!

Donations for Katie: Thanks for chatting with us! First, why don't you tell us a little about yourself.

Liesa: I am a Jamaican born, suffering from Peter Pan syndrome. I'm a 28 year old mother of one son and big sister to one bother parading around as an 18 year old living life as colorfully as possible. I enjoy spending time with family and friends and embracing my Caribbean roots. I LOVE art, music (all kinds), fashion, food, home decor, dance (all forms, especially Latin) and crafting. I guess you can say I love all things creative.

DfK: How did you get started in your craft?

L: I started crocheting at 12 years old. My mom and grandma use to crochet a lot and I found it fascinating. My mom taught how to work a chain, but the rest I pretty much taught myself. Over the years I picked up books to learn new techniques, but the style and color pallets I draw from the fashion industry and functionality I draw from my own day to day activities. Things I cannot sew I crochet…and it usually works for me.

DfK: What do you love most about your work?

L: The thing I love most about my work is the creativity. Taking an idea from my head and manifesting it into my work, and not to mention when others see the beauty in your work too.

DfK: Where do you get your inspiration?

L: Most of my inspiration is drawn from the styles of the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and a bit of the 80’s. And other times my inspiration comes from the things around me. Whether it be a garment to walk that runway, to a flower in a garden, graffiti on the side of a building, a commercial on television, or something I’ve eaten, inspiration is all around me, and when I get that inspiration I draw my lil heart out or jot down notes in my numerous notes note books.

DfK: What made you decide to support Katie through this auction?

L: I am a firm believer in giving back to others and being a blessing in any way I can. You never know what others are going through and if you can bring any ray of sunshine into their lives it the smallest gesture, but it can make a huge impact. I also know what its like to see someone you love battle cancer. Unfortunately the outcome was not favorable, and my uncle is greatly missed…I think of him everyday and wish he were still here, but I know he’s in a good place no longer suffering.

DfK: Anything you'd like to say to Katie directly?

L: Katie – Keep smiling!!!! Don’t let cancer see you with a frown or let’em think for a minute it’s got you beat. Look cancer straight in the eye and tell’em you’ve picked the wrong women to mess with!

How this works....when you purchase my custom perfume, you will be emailed a questionnaire to fill out and return. Based on this information, I will proceed to blend six testers for you to try. These testers will be sent within 10 days of your return message to me {i like to take time to concentrate on your blends!}....upon receipt of your perfume vials, you will need to try them out. Some people prefer to wear each one for a day to see how it sets on the skin, and how it mixes with your own body chemistry. The fragrances will all be different blends....so you will definitely have very different choices to choose from!

When you have finished your test drive of the fragrances, message me back with your selection! I will then mix your fragrance in an amber glass bottle. This perfume blend is yours and will remain on file with us so that you may order any product in your blend at any time.

Twilight Tote Bags from Zippityduda

Being environmentally friendly can be snazzy, too!

These marvelous cotton fabric bags are the same dimensions as those totes you see everywhere...except these are hip, funky and cool and don't have the name of some store on the side!

You are getting two of these fantastic bags in this graphic black and white / white and black print, both with the same great red floral handles. I have to confess that these were inspired by the covers of the Twilight books -- that red/white/black combo is just too good to ignore!

Bags measure a generous 12'' width x 13'' height x 8'' depth; they have a box pleat on the bottom, so you can easily fit a three or four cereal boxes in with room to spare. They're constructed so the handles are sewn into the seams, which makes them very sturdy.

You can jam a few of these in your purse, your backpack, the trunk of your car, and you'll always be ready to haul home some goodies. Take them to the grocery store, the co-op, the farmer's market, wherever!

I've got some people who now own 7 or 8 of these and they LOVE them. Who knows what kind of addictive tendencies these will bring out in you and your friends... You'll love using them!

The Silent Auction for Katie has begun!

Here are the auction rules - please review these before bidding:

-The auction starts at 12:01 am Friday March 19th, and ends at 11:59pm Sunday March 21st, Central St. Time.

-Place your bids in the "comments" for the specific item you wish to bid on. Please leave a separate comment for each bid you wish to make.

-Please leave your email address in your bids, or make sure that your email address is available in your blogger profile. All bids MUST contain a way for us to contact you, in order to be valid.

-Check the comments for the most recent high bid before bidding. You can check them by clicking "comments" at the bottom of each listing.

-Upon winning, you will have 48 hours to submit payment and email us your paypal rececipt, or another winner will be chosen.

-The highest bidder at the close of the auction (11:59 pm Sunday) wins. Please place your bids in increments of whole dollars. Thank you for participating and good luck!

The positive response to our blog and upcoming auction has already been fantastic! It's amazing to see so many people eager and ready to help a person in need. Donations for Katie - Lending a Helping Hand

Hi and welcome to Donations for Katie! This blog is still under construction, but we're glad you stopped by.

This is a joint project among friends to help someone in need - our friend Katie, who was diagnosed with lymphoma over a year ago. Katie's story is so touching, and her courage and strength of spirit through this trial are inspiring. We know Katie's gonna beat this, and we just want to help her along the way. With medical bills and the cost of medication always on the rise, our goal is to raise as much money as we can to help her small family cope with the expense of fighting cancer. The cost of these treatments is staggering. One single shot of a life-saving immune booster costs $1,200. Katie is supposed to get them regularly, but can't because of the expense. Then there is the oral chemo element to her treatment, which alone will cost another $29,000-$57,000 a year.

One way we aim to help is with a huge silent auction. If you're the owner of a company (or a crafter) and would like to donate products for this auction, we would LOVE to hear from you! Not only is this a worthy cause in and of itself, but to thank you for your support we're also going to do our best to promote our generous sponsors like crazy!
